The Worthing Society Committee extend their very best wishes to members and readers for 2025 .The New Year brings challenges but I am confident we have a strong, knowledgeable Committee dedicated to protecting our unique heritage buildings and valuable green infrastructure.
As Planning Consultees we shall continue commenting on forthcoming applications affecting our built heritage and on some of the larger development sites. We appreciate change is necessary: the question is how we ‘manage change’ in the heritage environment encouraging good quality design for our new buildings in terms of scale and materials with a colour palette reflecting the seaside character of our town.
Another priority will be to arrange meetings with both local MP’s to discuss the Government’s unrealistic housing targets for this area. Worthing has geographical constraints: bordered to the north by the South Downs National Park and the sea to the south. If every blade of grass were to be concreted over we could not meet these mandatory targets and we need to instigate discussions with those who have a voice in government.
We shall also be continuing our Heritage Walks and Talks to stimulate interest in our town’s social and architectural history and hopefully increase our membership. Please see our Website for details.
