SOCIAL OUTINGS FOR THE WORTHING SOCIETY -  2008.

JUNE 7   ARUNDEL & BURPHAM

A DAY’S OUTING with popular historian,Chris Hare who we are very pleased to advise joined our committee last year.

The plan is to meet Chris outside Arundel railway station by 11am on June 7. The tour of Arundel will end at 12:30pm. Lunch could then be taken either in Arundel,  or The George and Dragon at Burpham or to bring your own picnic lunch. Booking at the George and Dragon is advised.

We reconvene outside the latter pub at 14:15pm for our Burpham tour which would end at approximately 15:30/15:45pm when we would enjoy a pre-arranged and inclusive cream tea at Burpham Country Hotel. Cost £8.75 for the two tours plus cream tea. Payment required in advance.

JULY  26   MIDHURST   -   COWDRAY PARK

A visit travelling either by bus or car to Midhurst’s old town and Farmer’s Market  prior to meeting as a group at Cowdray Park’s former Tudor nobleman’s home, partially destroyed by a fire in 1793. The latter’s stunning romantic ruins and grounds were once a popular Victorian tourist attraction. One of the highlights is their still intact Tudor kitchen. Included in your entry price is the use of your own audio guide. See www.cowdray.org.uk

They have a delightful garden shop and cafe offering a light lunch or tea/coffee with scrumptious cakes. Occasionally it may be closed but there are many cafes in the town if this should occur.  Travel arrangements:  by car or bus. Car lifts,if possible, will be arranged.

Bus No. 1 departs from Worthing at 9:05am, arriving in Midhurst town at 10:26am. Your return journey could be 14:30pm – there are hourly departures.  (Please check on the bus times prior to your departure).  Cost for the visit would be £5:50 per person.

If interested, at the end of the visit you may wish to continue on to Petworth House, The Weald Museum or West Dean Gardens, en route back to Worthing. An entry charge would be made at these attractions.

Parking available in Midhurst’s North Street car park (behind the bus terminal).

AUGUST 6   FINCHCOCK’S

MUSICAL MUSEUM and CONCERT

We plan for our group to travel individually to Finchcocks by car. But, we aim to try and arrange lifts for those without transport. Finchcocks is located off the A21 on the A262, two miles west of Goudhurst village near to the border of Kent and Sussex.

Our plan is to arrive at Finchcocks around 12md when we will be able to enjoy our own picnic lunch in their picturesque front gardens under the trees.  Their walled and other gardens open at 12:30pm, giving us an hour or more to enjoy them prior to visiting the Georgian Manor House at 14:00pm.

Informal demonstrations of the Museum’s historic keyboard instruments – there are at least a 100 of them  -  and two different recitals  will take place between 2:45pm and 3:45pm. Teas are available in the cellar restaurant.  The next recital will be given between 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Cost for Worthing Society members and friends will be £11:50.

Our members are free to choose how they want to spend the Open Day at Finchcocks and may like to visit Scotney Castle and it’s Estate either in the morning prior to meeting up with the group at Finchcocks or to take an easy walk along the country lane between Finchcocks and Scotney Castle, a mile away.

You will love the magnificent scenery of Scotney’s wooded estate and farming land. But the last entry permitted at Scotney is 3:55pm – allowing an hour’s visit. And, to visit their Castle and Gardens is an additional charge. It is a National Trust property and if you are a member you should bring your National Trust card.

Final details will be given once bookings and payments have been made.
